The title page of this volume reads "Field record data on Saudi Arabian fishes taken by D.S. Erdman 1948." Each page is a field data record sheet of the U. S. National Museum Division of Fishes; these are dated 27 March to 15 August 1948. Data sheet fields include acc. no., tag no., sta. no., state or country, county, city, locality, drainage, date, water, vegetation, time, bottom, shore, current, distance from shore, tide, depth of capture, depth of water, method of capture, collected by, preservative, temp, and air, with space at the bottom half of the sheet for a "list of species or kinds, with tag numbers if drawn or discussed." Station numbers span from U-48-1 to U-48-166. Collections were made from the Persian Gulf, particularly around Ras Tanura [Ra's Tannurāh] and Tarut Bay [Khalīj Tārūt], and the Red Sea, as well as ponds, springs, other water bodies, and markets. Collecting methods include seine, dip net, spear, hook and line, hand, eel pot, and others. Species and numbers of individuals are listed in the bottom half of each page, sometimes with colored drawings. Also listed are non-fish collections, including snails, crabs, shrimp, insects, and other invertebrates, and birds, frogs, lizards, and other vertebrates. Additional information, such as fish observed but not captured, is also included.
