Abstract

Field notes, 1874-1877, created by Richard Rathbun during a collecting trip to various parts of Brazil. Notes are divided into four sections: Zoology (in which he describes several classes of specimens including corals, sea urchins, octopus, and star fish), Tunicata, Ophiuroidea, Hydroidea. Some sections are further subdivided by small folders. Sketches are included throughout the field book. Notes include clippings from reprints pasted into various sections. Field notes include the location the specimens were observed or collected, abundance or rarity of the specimen, quantity collected, physical characteristics including color and measurements (especially when accompanied by a sketch), and sometimes narrative summaries of a particular species or specimen group. Also includes an envelope of specimen labels with additional notes. Localities include Bon Fin in Bahia, Botabog Bay in Rio de Janero, and perhaps other localities.
