Abstract

The notebook is a compilation of information from Western Union Telegraph Expedition to Alaska. Initially lists specimens sent from San Francisco by Hubbard on July 15, 1865, in three boxes to the Smithsonian (handwriting appears to belong to someone other than Dall). Interspersed, are dated journal entries, January 8 - February 1, 1866, detailing Dall's work. Entries describe terrain, birds observed, shells collected, preparation of mollusk specimens, daily activities, and expenses. The notebook has a significant portion blank. In the latter half is a draft of a letter detailing activities on the Western Union Telegraph Expedition, and another list (in pencil) of specimens collected, with quantity and sketches. Locations mentioned include Cypress Point, Society Islands, and Mussel Point.
