The field book is organized into journal and field notes. They document Charles O. Handley Jr.'s collecting in the Arctic in conjunction with the US Navy, July - September 1948. Pages are numbered (1 - 368). Entries are headed with date and location / route. Entries discuss travel details (destinations, method of travel) including details of time in Boston and off the coast of Maine; Canada to Greenland. Entries also detail preparations, wildlife observations including enroute (date, abundance / rarity, quantity, daily activities with time of day), weather and temperature, terrain and communities seen enroute, sea voyage including observations traveling through icy waters, specimen collecting and preparation, observations of flora and fauna from helicopter, interactions with staff, observations about daily life onboard, B-17 completing reconnaissance. Bird and mammal observations are often listed separately at the end of an entry. Includes hand drawn maps of collecting area with notes on vegetation, helicopter and pedestrian routes in Thule, Allen bay; sketches of geological strata; sketch of Eskimo fish spear; table of weather data. Locations include Greenland (Thule), Ellesmere Islands (Canada), Melville Sound. |The field notes (217 - 368) are organized by type of wildlife observed. Related entries are headed with locality and date and brief description of activities and location of specimen. These are ended with a summary.
