Abstract

The journal documents the collecting of K. L. Lange in Madagascar and Mauritius for the Smithsonian Institution African Mammal Project, August 25, 1962 - May 7, 1963. Pages are numbered (1 - 60 for 1962; 1 - 40 for 1963). Entries are dated and headed with locality (combination of country, region, town, distance from, sometimes campsites or elevation). Narratives describe travel details (time of day, destinations, mode of transportation, distances, routes, destinations), colleagues with whom worked, daily activities, collecting method (quantity, type, layout, bait), habitat, vegetation, specimens collected (type including birds, fish, mammals; quantity; sometimes 4 measurements), observations of wildlife (mammals, birds) and flora including state of growth, weather, description of a microgale, phonetic spellings and terms for local names of wildlife, local industries (types of agriculture), and references to photographs taken. Temperatures (minimum and maximum), relative humidity with time of day are usually listed at the end of daily entries.
