Abstract

The journal documents R. E. Cole's field work as part of the Smithsonian Institution African Mammal Project, June 29, 1963 - April 30, 1964. Entries are dated and sometimes headed with location (combination of country, region, town, and distance from). Begins with a list of latitudes and longitudes for trapping localities as well as classes, orders, and families of the collection (with quantities) from Portuguese East Africa [Mozambique]. Content describes travel details (campsites, routes, travel challenges), colleagues with whom worked, collecting methods (type, quantity), specimens collected (type, quantity), additional location information (names of farms and geological landmarks), daily work and time of day, temperature and weather, observations of flora (including crops) and fauna (including insects and birds). The are notes about collecting and sketch of trap locations at Niemans farm (South Africa); sketch of waterbuck with measurements.
