Abstract

The journal documents H. John Herbert's field work in Mozambique and Bechuanaland Protectorate [Botswana] as part of the Smithsonian Institution African Mammal Project, July 1964 - April 26, 1965. Some pages are numbered (1 - 83). Entries are dated and often headed with locality (combination of country, region, elevation, distance from). Content describes travel details (destinations, routes, methods of travel, challenges), impressions of and interactions with colleagues and local inhabitants, collecting methods (bait, type and quantity), specimens collected (type and quantity, sometimes sex), terrain and vegetation, temperature and weather, sometimes phase of moon, and observations of wildlife (including notes on abundance). Includes sketch of campsites. Collecting locations include Tete province, Mozambique.
