Abstract

The journal documents H. John Herbert's field work as part of the Smithsonian Institution African Mammal Project, November 2, 1965 - July 22, 1966. Entries are dated and sometimes headed with locality (combination of country, town, province, distance from landmark, names of ranches). Content describes work completed in connection with the Rockefeller Foundation Lab in Nigeria. Entries detail collecting methods (bait, type and quantity), specimens collected (type, sex, and quantity), weather and temperature, humidity, phase of moon, specimen preparation, and campsites. In the end is a table of temperatures for 1965-1966, listing date, minimum low, maximum high, temperature 0700, temperature 1900, relative humidity 0700, relative humidity 1900, moon and remarks that describe weather. Locations include but not limited to the vicinity of Panyam, Sapoba Forest Reserve, Ibadan, Asaba, Calabar, Kano Province, Zaria, Nigeria.
