Abstract

The journal documents D. L. Herbert's field work in Nigeria as part of the Smithsonian Institution African Mammal Project, December 6, 1965 - July 4, 1966. Entries are dated and sometimes headed with location. Content describes travel details (campsites, travel challenges), locality descriptions (distance from landmarks, collecting methods (type, quantity), specimens collected (type, quantity, including ectoparasites, sometimes specimen number), temperature and weather, work with colleagues, interactions with local inhabitants, terrain seen enroute, sometimes humidity, hunting behavior of local inhabitants, observations of wildlife, and visits to plantations. Includes sketches of specimens. Notes collected also occurred at night.
