Abstract

The journal documents Arthur Crane Risser Jr.'s field work in South Africa as part of the Smithsonian Institution African Mammal Project, November 28, 1963 - May 10, 1964. Entries are headed with date and locality (combination of distance from location, town, province, country). Content describes travel details (campsites, routes), terrain (including soil composition), vegetation, habitat, collecting method (type and quantity), daily activity and time of day, temperature and weather, phase of moon, specimens collected (type and quantity), colleagues with whom worked, specimen preparation, and interactions with local inhabitants. Includes a map of Springbok and Clanwilliam, relating to camp location; sketches of trapping setups; loose insert headed liver tissue samples [instructions] for Saimr; and correspondence to Henry W. Setzer from Peter Stettenheim (Zoologist with US Department of Agriculture) discussing methods to study chromosomes removed from specimen tissues. Locations include but not limited to Cape province and Natal [KwaZulu-Natal].
