Abstract

The journal documents Arthur Crane Risser Jr.'s field work in South Africa and Namibia as part of the Smithsonian Institution African Mammal Project, June 29 - November 25, 1963. Entries are dated and headed with location (combination of landmark, town, county, state, and country). Content describes travel details (routes), vegetation (including crops), collecting methods (type and quantity), specimens collected (type and quantity), colleagues with whom he worked, daily work and time of day, temperature and weather, sometimes altitude, and observations of wildlife. Includes map of collecting site (Neiman's Farm in South Africa, Smither's Ranch in Southern Rhodesia), and grid trap plan for each farm. At the end of some entries are totals for specimens, miles traveled, cost of gas and oil, and number gallons used. Locations include Maryland, United States; South Africa including region of Rhodesia.
