Abstract

The journal documents Gary L. Ranck's field work in Libya as part of the Smithsonian Institution African Mammal Project, December 2, 1961 - June 23, 1962. Pages are numbered (1 - 150). Entries are dated and describe travel details (campsites, arrangements, accommodations), descriptions of observed wildlife (herds, diet, noting concentrations and abundance), daily work and time of day, collecting methods (type and quantity), specimens collected (type and quantity including insects), terrain and vegetation, interactions with local inhabitants, local staffing, local events including 10th anniversary of Libyan "independence", weather (including discussions of the "ghibli") and temperature, visitors, work with military convoys and transport in area (British). Includes story about fatal injury of support staff and significant travel challenges due to strong winds (ghibli).
