Abstract

The field book documents the work of Lester F. Ward for the US Geological Survey, July 1, 1890 - March 31, 1892. Entries are dated and describe office work including study of collections and publications as well as field work. Entries describe nature of work and sometimes names of colleagues with whom completed (various). Field work included geological surveys of coastal Massachusetts, collecting of fossilized plant specimens, terrain and geological descriptions (layers, rock types, color and composition) of collecting sites, and Maryland sites bordering Washington, DC. Entries in 1891 describe trip to American southeast (Tennessee, Arkansas) and across multiple locations in Texas. Collecting sites are often along railroads and bodies of water. Locations include Gay Head, Naushon, Massachusetts; New Haven, Connecticut; Severn River, Maryland; District of Columbia.
