Abstract

The field catalog documents the mammals collected by F. Stephens across United States, February 6, 1891 - July 2, 1902. Pages are numbered. Volume includes multiple catalogs bound together; pagination restarts with each catalog. Entries cover specimen number (1 - 4785), sex, name of species (scientific), some USNM catalog numbers (non consecutive), locality (town or geological landmarks, state, sometimes altitude), date, measurements (total length, tail vertebrae, and hind foot), and remarks. Remarks include a combination of details such as additional location information, specimen condition, habitat, terrain and vegetation, altitude, animal tracks seen in vicinity of collecting areas, time of day, temperature, weather, snowfall, diet, quantity of fetuses, additional measurements, and whether topotype or type. Some remarks about collecting locations are extensive. Some habitat details are listed in locality column. Locations include sites in Arizona, California, and Nevada.
