Abstract

The field catalog documents the mammals collected by H. H. Sheldon in California, North Dakota, Oregon, South Dakota, Wisconsin, May 7, 1915 - October 15, 1922. Entries cover USNM catalog number (non consecutive), specimen number (1 - 1090), sex, name (scientific), locality (state, town, geological landmarks, sometimes distances from, altitude), date, measurements (3 types), and remarks. Remarks include a combination of details such as method collected, habitat and vegetation, notes on abundance / rarity (sometimes noting if a pest to local farmers), results of dissection (quantity of fetuses, stomach contents), additional location information (sometimes referring to landmarks), notes on specimen exchanges, additional measurements of anatomy, and specimen condition along with signs of illness. A portion of the notebook is blank.
