Abstract

The field book documents the field work of Lester F. Ward for the US Geological Survey, October 29, 1893 - June 4, 1897. Notes describe observations of sites in District of Columbia, Maryland, and northern Virginia. Entries are headed with date, location visited, and reference to name of colleague with whom worked (Bibbons, Hollick, Mason, and Watson). These are followed with narratives describing locations, nature of work completed (sometimes procuring and research sites where fossilized plants found), and sometimes followed by numbered sites with descriptions per site including landmarks (i.e. structures, streets, and distances from), measurements (of layers), terrain and soil characteristics (color, composition,i.e. sand, loam, gravel, clay). Includes geological sections. Details collecting fossilized botanical specimens, some with identifying numbers. Locations include sites across Maryland.
