Pages are numbered, and entries are dated. Includes descriptions of travel between destinations; weather; strata and characteristics and types of rock observed; bluffs seen along the river; sections listing locations and descriptions of each layer; interactions between settlers, American Indians, and survey participants; issues arising from Whiskey smuggling; references to sightings of higher quantities of frogs than normal. Locations include Fort Pierre (South Dakota), Council Bluffs (Iowa), Missouri River, White River, and Sargent's Bluff (Iowa).
