Abstract

The field book documents Fielding Meek's participation Geological Survey of the Missouri, July 27 - August 25, 1853, Meek's weather weather observations for Albany, New York, September 30, 1853 - January 22, 1854, and a catalog of Professor James Hall's library. Pages are numbered, and entries are dated. Includes descriptions of travel between destinations; weather; strata and characteristics and types of rock observed; bluffs seen along the river; sections listing locations and descriptions of each layer; interactions between settlers, American Indians, and survey participants; issues arising from Whiskey smuggling; references to sightings of higher quantities of frogs than normal. Locations include Fort Pierre (South Dakota), Council Bluffs (Iowa), Missouri River, White River, and Sargent's Bluff (Iowa).
