Abstract

The field catalog documents the mammals collected by James H. Gaut, in California, District of Columbia, Maryland, Mexico, New Mexico, Oklahoma, Texas, Virginia, November 1896 - January 1906. Pages are numbered; several catalogs are bound together, and pagination restarts with each catalog. Entries cover some USNM catalog numbers, specimen number (1 - 4261), sex, type (scientific name), locality (town, geological landmark, state), date, measurements (3 types), and remarks. Remarks include a combination of specimen condition, preparation, notes on loans, collector, terrain (including relation of location to timberline), altitude, additional location information (distance from landmarks, names of ranches), and habitat.
