Abstract

The field book documents Fielding Meek's participation in David Dale Owen's Survey, 1848-1849, which covered the states of Iowa, Wisconsin, and Minnesota. The book begins with an itinerary for April to July 29, 1848. Journal entries cover July 30 to November 8, 1848. Entries begin with date, temperature and weather. Details include descriptions of strata and rock formations, vegetation, terrain, daily activities, activities of survey participants. Much of the survey is spent following rivers: Saint Croix, Blue Earth, Minnesota, Chippewa. Back of the notebook includes sketches, tables, list of participants, notes of survey on St. Peters River [Minnesota River], listof formations, provisions, and Sioux terms with English translations.
