Abstract

Field book documents Fielding Meek's participation in David Dale Owen's Survey, 1848-1849, which covered the states of Iowa, Wisconsin, and Minnesota. Beginning includes notes -- Sioux names for local rivers, members of the survey, labeled section of strata observed St. Peters River [Minnesota River], list of birds (Latin and common names) observed near Minnesota River. Pages with journal entries are numbered. Daily entries include date, weather, and temperature. The entries detail strata, terrain and formations seen along rivers traveled including the Mississippi River from St. Louis, past Albany (Illinois), and Bloomington (Iowa); Minnesota River; activities of survey participants; and interactions with local American Indians.
