Abstract

The field book documents E. W. Nelson's field work in California in June 24 - September 30, 1891. Entries are dated and describe daily activities and times of day, observations of terrain (elevation) and vegetation (types listed with common or scientific name), hired local staff, specimen collecting, observed flora and fauna (sometimes listed with elevation), nests, and descriptions of areas around campsites. Some location names may be in local "Indian" language. There are lists of birds and plants seen per location with descriptions of abundance or habitat. Locations include Inyo mountains, Saline Valley, White mountains, head of San Joaquin, Yosemite Valley, Wawona, and Kern River.
