Abstract

The field book documents A. H. Howell's field work in a series of trips to Florida, Georgia, Michigan, North Carolina, Ohio, South Carolina, Tennessee, Virginia, May 1930 - January 1936. Howell was a senior biologist for the US Biological Survey. Entries are dated and describe travel details (destinations, times of day, campsites), interactions and work with local staff and individuals, meetings attended, specimens collected (birds), weather, daily work, vegetation and terrain (sometimes elevation). Location information includes communities and geological landmarks, not always with state identified. Locations include Mount Mitchell, Georgia; Smokemont, North Carolina (1930). In 1932, he collected in in the vicinity of Wilmington, North Carolina; In 1934, Michigan, Virginia, and South Carolina; and in 1935 - 1936, Florida.
