The field book documents A. H. Howell's field work in Colorado and New York, May 13 - November 8, 1895. Entries are dated and location or route is often listed at the top of the entry. Subject matter covers terrain (elevation) and vegetation seen enroute, observations of birds (and flocks), and specimens collected. Often entries are lists of birds with notes on numbers. There are headings per type of wildlife in entries describing in depth about abundance, habitat, and behavior (including song). Locations include vicinity of Niagara Falls, New York; Columbia Falls to Kalispell, Montana; Stillwater creek, Osborne to Kingston, (no state identified); British Columbia, Canada; Snake River, Washington; Grande Ronde Valley, Oregon; Kephi, Utah.
