Abstract

The journal documents Vernon Orlando Bailey's fieldwork in Montana, Washington, October 17 - November 20, 1930. Entries are dated and includes descriptions of travel to Billings, Montana, to inspect coyote traps and poison lines. Subject matter includes travel details (times of day, destinations, distances), interactions with colleagues, weather and temperature, terrain (marshes), vegetation (types), observed wildlife (including muskrats, gophers, coyotes and notes on abundance), specimens collected (some with sex, location, date, weight, and stomach contents), list of birds and mammals observed per location with quantities, summaries of conversations local officials about wildlife populations, coyote droppings; and meetings with local trappers. Some locations are identified by names of rancher owners. Locations include but not limited to Rotten Grass Creek, Montana; Yakima, Washington.
