Abstract

The journal documents Vernon Orlando Bailey's fieldwork in District of Columbia, Kentucky, Pennsylvania, October 1 - November 19, 1929. Entries are dated and describe travel from Grand Canyon to Washington, DC. Subject matter includes descriptions of terrain and vegetation enroute, weather, daily activities (including conferences), travel to Harrisburg, Pennsylvania with Dr. W. B. Bell; meetings with local officials to discuss deer population management at refuges; observations of birds; specimen collecting; Grizzly Bear account from 1917 (notes indicate Merriam wrote about in publication); observations of bats (populations, habitat) in caves of Kentucky, Old Mammoth cave, and Colossal caverns. Locations include Mosquito Creek, Mifflinburg, Pennsylvania; Cave City, Kentucky.
