Abstract

The journal documents Vernon Orlando Bailey's fieldwork in Amatol, New Jersey, beginning in May 21, 1919 until an unknown date. He is listed as the chief field naturalist for the Biological Survey. Entries are dated and described travel from Washington, DC, to New Jersey. He was investigating damage to stores and property at the arsenal (military installation) at Amatol, caused by rats. Entries describe conversations with local inhabitants relating to the investigation (military officials, surgeons at hospital), observations of dead rats at hospital facilities, surrounding store houses, barracks; rat population makeup (number of adults); and methods of eradication.
