Abstract

Daily, narrative field notes of mostly birds and some mammals Howell observed from 19 January 1887 to 31 May 1888 in New York. Several miscellaneous note sections are also included. Birds are referred to by common name. Howell notes bird songs (sometimes with transcription), bird activities, if it was common, and weather descriptions. Notes on eggs and nests are also included. Localities include Brooklyn, NY. Notes end in May 1888 and are followed by several tables. One records the following: name (common name), time of nesting (date), authority, and locality (including Massachusetts; Long Island, NY; New Jersey, and many other localities). Another table records "migrants and summer residents" with common name and time of arrival listed. A table called "seen by me" lists birds seen in 1888-1890. Notes on distinguishing marks on birds and notes entitled "concerning the study of ornithology" are included. Following these tables and miscellaneous notes, the daily entries continue.
