Abstract

The journal documents Vernon Orlando Bailey's collecting mammal and bird specimens in New Mexico, Oklahoma, Texas, August 1 - November 16, 1906. Entries are dated and detail travel (routes, modes of travel, destinations, accommodations), descriptions of communities visited (including size and crops grown), terrain (including soil composition), vegetation (including mushrooms), daily activities and time of day, interactions with colleagues, notes about wolf populations and specimens, observed wildlife (including type and abundance),and campsites. Includes a sketch of a beaver corral and mountain terrain. Includes loose inserts listing plants in South Clara Canyon, Jemez mountains (New Mexico), organized by Canadian, Transition and Upper Sonoran regions, listing type (scientific), distance, and elevation. Locations visited includes Oklahoma City, Enid, Oklahoma; Amarillo, Texas; San Francisco River [Saint Francis River]; Silver City (state unidentified).
