Abstract

The journal documents Vernon Orlando Bailey's collecting mammal and bird specimens in Colorado, New Mexico, May 16, 1904 - October 11, 1903. Details travel from Washington DC. Entries are dated and pages are headed with locations. Entries describe routes, mode of travel, collecting methods, terrain (including elevation), vegetation, observed mammals and birds, some history of area communities and inhabitants, ranches, campsites, and specimen collecting (common and scientific name). Includes sketches of vegetation formations (mushroom fairy rings) and land around Santa Fe. There is a list of specimens collected at Taos mountains. In the end is a list of packages sent with specimen contents, locations and date. Locations include Santa Rosa, Baldy Peak [mountain], Taos, Santa Fe, New Mexico; Canyon City, Boulder, Colorado.
