Abstract

The journal documents Vernon Orlando Bailey's collecting mammal and bird specimens in Texas, California, and New Mexico, April 10 - August 16, 1900. Entries are dated and pages are headed with location information. Details include routes, distances, campsites, daily activities with time of day, terrain (including elevation, soil composition), vegetation (type and abundance), ranches visited, observed wildlife, specimens collected, communities visited, interactions with colleagues, and sometimes notes about expenses. Portion of the end of the notebook is blank. Locations include Austin, Corpus Christi, Brownsville, Texas; Cloudcroft, New Mexico; Pasadena, Sacramento, Sierra Buttes, Emerald Bay, California.
