Abstract

The photograph album documents Alexander Wetmore's work in South America for the U.S. Department Agriculture, Bureau of Biological Survey, 1920-1921. He was investigating the distribution of life zones of North American migratory birds in Uruguay, Argentina, Chile, and Peru. Photographs sometimes include numbers (assigned by Wetmore), date, and caption with description and location. Photographs document vegetation (Latin and common names), varying terrain (wetlands, mountains, valleys, rivers) of the areas he observed, birds and their nests, examples of his transport, colleagues, local workers, examples of local structures and residences including an adobe brick hut, and cities and towns visited. Locations include vicinity of Mendoza, Buenos Aires and Pampa in Argentina, and Montevideo, Uruguay. Includes photographs of Wetmore, James Lee Peters, and Wilfrid B. Alexander.
