Abstract

The black-and-white photographs document the field work of Henry Cushier Raven in Celebes, 1916 - 1918. They are organized into four groupings or "books". Photographs are numbered, but not in consecutive order. First book includes images of residences and structures, campsites, local inhabitants (groups, individuals, and candid scenes), detail images of vegetation, sailing vessels, primates, vistas of terrain. Book II includes candid images if local inhabitants cooking, farming, and other daily activities; ruins; unidentified mammals; vistas of terrain and rivers; campsites; portraits of individual and groups of inhabitants in local dress. Book III includes an image dated 1919. Subject matter includes as listed above and primates, rodents, birds, bats, snakes; specimens being prepared at campsites; moving cattle by water; ports. Book IV includes coastlines; fish, birds, primates and other mammals; sailing vessels; mountains; waterfalls; temples and ruins; locally made baskets.
