Abstract

This is the third of four sketchbooks of wildlife of Sudan, 1912 - 1913, by Abel Chapman. It includes a number of loose inserts. Includes personal correspondence from Bill Upsham(?). Cover page is entitled “Photos of Elefants (by Akeley” see “Illustrated London News” of February 15, 1913). The inside cover includes a series of notes. Illustrations cover birds, large mammals (including elephants), and fish. Subject matter includes images of groups, individuals, habitat, sometimes behavior. Some are detailed sketches with notes about appearance and color. Captions detail type of animal, location and sometimes date. Locations include Sudd and Maleh.

The Library is open to Smithsonian staff Monday through Friday in the afternoons, from 1:30 to 5:00 p.m.; morning visits are by appointment only
