Abstract

Alexander Wetmore travels to the Amazonas territory of Venezuela in 1954 to take part in a ornithological expedition sponsored by William H. Phelps. Materials include correspondence, travel notes, expense records, itineraries, provisions lists, maps, reports, and reference materials. Correspondents include James H. Kempton, William H. Phelps, Jr., and Helena M. Weiss. A two page summary of the expedition (August 8, 1954) explains followed the major waterways of the region, Río Guainía and Río Yatua continuing on to Cerro de la Neblina, then on to Maroa and Victorino near the border of Colombia. The group included botanists, geologists and ornithologists. Wetmore's field notes are chronological and include bird lists, supply lists, and individuals and contact information. Maps include a Orinoco Mining Company Map includes markings indicating route, stopping points and corresponding dates; copy of a map with markings, Map of Cerro de la Neblina, and colored map of Route of the Phelps Expedition of Venezuela, 1954.
