Abstract

The journal documents Edmund Heller's field work, c. October 28 - November 8 (year unknown), for the National Geographic Society Yale University Peruvian Expedition, 1915. Information is entered from the front and back of the notebook. Entries are dated, and include details about weather, local inhabitants and individuals who live in Peru, travel details (destinations, campsites, staffing), flora and fauna observed, Machupicchu [Incan] ruins, recordings of other observations of the area flora (including flowers) and fauna (birds, rodents and other mammals), specimens collected, collecting methods, and daily work with time of day. Entered from the back of the note book are lists of flora and fauna observed and collected, organized by type and location. These include birds, mammals, reptiles, and plants in Machupicchu city and La Raya. There are a significant number of notations / edits in red through out the journal. Crossed out sections may have been copied.
