Abstract

The journal documents Edmund Heller's field work, August 14 - October 8 (year not stated), for the National Geographic Society Yale University Peruvian Expedition, 1915. There are multiple hand drawn maps, the first in the in the front of the notebook detailing campsites. Information is entered from the front and the back of the notebook. Entries are dated. They detail weather, daily work, travel details (destinations, campsites, staffing, planing, trails taken), daily work and time of day, flora and fauna observations, fish-trapping, specimens collected (sometimes stomach contents), collecting methods, descriptions of terrain (with elevations), and interactions with Machiganga Indians. Starting from the back, there are lists relating to specimens, headed by field number; mammals, fruit, trees, birds, with common and local names. There are a significant number of notations / edits in red through out the journal. Locations includes Corranaquayco, Quirapatax, Lucma, Pucura, Puquiura [Pucyura].
