Abstract

The field book documents Edmund Heller's field work during the Smithsonian African Expedition, 1909-1910. Includes the original map that is copied in another folder. The field book includes an diagram of an animal with abbreviations referring to types of measurements recorded in field book lists. These include 9 different measurements of animals. The specimen lists include USNM catalog number, field number, type, sex, location collected, date, and additional measurements (4 types). Location information varies in format, sometimes refers to geographical locations, individual farms, or countries. Includes a typed, loose insert of mammals collected for the Smithsonian. Locations include but are not limited to Kapiti Plains [Ilkaputiei], Guaso Nijiro [Ewaso Ng’iro], Algeria, Mount Kenia [Kirinyaga], Mongalla.
