Abstract

The journal is that of photographer, Donald Dickey, and was sent to Alexander Wetmore by Jane P. Church in October 1969. The journal describes Donald's Dickey's experiences as a member of the Tanager Expedition to Hawaii, during 1923. The journal begins with his departure from California, and continues through his arrival in Hawaii, meeting the other expedition participants and the subsequent voyage. Entries are chronological, and pages are numbered. He includes weather, location, latitude and longitude positions, and bearing at the beginning of entries. He discusses members of the crew, repairs, daily activities, observations of wildlife (uses common and scientific names) and vegetation; descriptions of vacated structures on islands; films made; photographs taken; and extensive descriptions of Teals and Terns. Extensive descriptions of Laysan Island.
