Abstract

The field notes and diary document Bohumil Shimek's work in Iowa, Illinois, October 13 - November 5, 1906. Pages are numbered. Entries are dated and often headed with location. They describe observations of river banks, bluffs, and cuts into terrain for the construction of railroad lines. Entries detail shape of terrain and sometimes include evidence of drift, presence of fossils, measurements, layers, composition, color, and appearance. The notebook includes lists of expenses listed by date and trip. Includes sketches and geological sections. Often locations are described as a distance between two towns. A little over half of the notebook is blank. Locations include the vicinity of Ottumwa, Albia, Unionville, Columbus Junction, Fruitland, Fairfield, Rome, Iowa; Joy, Gladstone, Illinois.
