Abstract

The field notes and diary document Bohumil Shimek's work in Iowa, July and October 1904. Destinations covered in notebook are listed on the cover. Pages are numbered. The markings indicating that some notes have been copied. The notebook has significant blank segments. Entries include lists headed by type of terrain or location (Prairie slope, ridge; Old Mans' Creek), date, and plants (scientific name) with notes. Entries pages 28 and onward are headed with date, destination ranges of trips, descriptions of plants observed, descriptions of terrain (bluffs, drift), and soil composition where they are found. Details listed include measurements; depth, appearance, color, and composition of soil observed; sketches of terrain; geological sections; and notes about fossils found. Locations include the vicinity of towns Waterloo, Loveland, Arion, Monroe, Harlan; and counties Carroll, Harrison, Harlan.
