Abstract

"This is a complete catalog of all the birds collected by me up to date, excepting only my original collection of mounted specimens, and unlabeled skins collected for exchange with the dealers,” Edgar A. Mearns, March 14, 1874 (title page). The catalogue (containing the following information: number, name, date, length, stretch, sex and age) goes up to about 1880, then begins a daily field journal containing narrative observations along with bird lists, 1880—1884. Starting in 1883 the notes reflect his work at the American Museum of Natural History. Entries beginning March 11, 1884, document his trip west to Arizona and much of the remaining entries document the first few days of his stay in Arizona (March 28, 1884). Localities in which birds were collected include a Highland Falls (NY) (a significant portion was collected here), Central Park (NY), Circleville (OH), Nevada, and Arizona. Collector or personal numbers for the main catalog are 1-2681 and 6846. An "index to the birds in this volume" starts on page 467.
