Abstract

The journal describes the botany of the regions through which Kearney passed in his 1898 travels through Virginia and North Carolina. Pages are numbered. Entries are dated and include locations. Journal entries describe observations of native and cultivated plant life, sometimes by taxon name and sometimes by common name. Entries also sometimes discuss the soil characteristics in which the plants are grown and speculation on what crops may do well in that area. References are made to conversations with locals about land and plant use.|The last couple of pages include a list of “Principal Truckers of the Vicinity of Norfolk, Va” and notes entitled “Miscellaneous” which include reflections on the area.
