Abstract

Heinrich inspects cotton and other plants in Arizona for insect infestation for the United States Department of Agriculture. The journal is arranged by date, and contains details about the surveying and collecting at farms, ranches, and wilderness areas. Details recorded for each site include location information (city, ranch name, mountain range), type of crop (cotton or corn), size of field, genus found if infested (including Diatraea and thurberia weevils), and if samples were taken. When collecting in the mountains, he included elevation and sometimes a list surrounding vegetation. The geography covers areas around El Paso, Phoenix, Mesa, Tucson, and Tempe, Arizona, as well as Chiricahua mountains, Rucker Canyon, Santa Rita Mountains, Red River Canyon, and Mojave desert near the California border. The journal also has itinerary details of people visited, social activities, and expenses.
