Field notes on birds observed, collected, and banded in California, 1938-1939

Abstract

This field book contains notes on bird banding, bird observations, and bird traps from Hurd's field work in California between 1938-1939. Dates are not presented in order and reflect activities which took place at various times during 1938 and 1939. Localities include but are not limited to Aphelocoma, Rialto, San Bernardino, Costa Mesa, and Orange County. Bird banding series numbers include 38 and 39. A series 138 is also included. Ranges of numbers for each series are as follows: Series 38, 99651-99656 and 246031-364983; Series 39, 128646-209565; Series 138; 114501-114510. These are possibly bird banding numbers. Most data are in tables. One common table records series number, collector/banding number, age, sex, date, time, trap number, bait, and references. A table of foreign returns includes species, age, date , cause of death. Other tables include "returns in Costa Mesa", "record of nests and eggs", "birds observed in orange county", " Birds observed in san bernadino" (including common name, scientific name, A.o.u., state, ornithologist, number), and "recapitulation of birds caught in various traps". Also included is a description of traps used at bird banding station, record of bands used, and quantity of birds taken by month accompanied by a hand drawn graph.
