The color moving image documents Waldo Schmitt's work during the Smithsonian-Bredin Belgian Congo Expedition, 1955. The 32 minute motion picture exists as Reels 12, 13, 19; film transfer with wet gate; 3/4" U-matic videotape; August 23, 1995; and a digital file. There is no sound. It shows local officials, ports, sights, new buildings, local inhabitants at work, observed flora and fauna (birds, snakes, and crustaceans), native dancers, lava fields at Albert National Park [Virunga National Park], crustaceans in the lab, specimen collecting in inland waters (marshes) and in tide, Egyptian ruins, and industrial facilities. The film also documents time during Smithsonian-Bredin Society Islands Expedition, 1957. Second portion of tape shows native dances and collecting on beaches.
