Catalog of birds includes number, type, and date. The journal includes dated entries (headed with latitude and longitude position or terrestrial location) that describe voyage and destinations, sea conditions, weather, specimens collected, towns visited and terrain observed, daily work, observations of local inhabitants at work, soundings taken, quantity and characteristics of fauna observed (birds, crustaceans), water temperatures, and list of vessels in Hong Kong Harbor. Includes discussions of Commodore Perry's negotiations in Japan; the ships visited the coast during this period. The cruise spent significant time in region of Hong Kong. Pages are numbered. Locations include Simons Bay (South Africa), Port Jackson (New South Whales, Australia), Southern Pacific Ocean, Whampoa Reach, Bonin Islands [Ogasawara-gunto], Japan, and Loo Choo [Ryukyu Islands].
