Abstract

Volume 81 is a collection of the journals of David Pearson, F. C. Thompson, Jeff Tordoff, and Robert Tusxon completed for the Pacific Ocean Biological Survey Program, 1965-1966. These are original journals,including hand written entries; includes one copy [Tordoff journal]. 1) is the journal of David Pearson for Southern Island Cruise [SIC] #14, July 5 - August 10, 1966. Dated entries describe departure and destinations, birds observed and with what frequency, island terrain and vegetation, sketch of observed birds, descriptions of physical characteristics, grid work, population estimates of breeding species, butterfly collecting, and observations of birds, eggs, and nests. Includes a specimen catalog including type, number, weight, fat, date, location, sex, collection method, and extensive measurements. Locations include islands of Howland, Gardner, American Samoa, and Jarvis. 2) is the catalog of F. Chris Thompson for SIC #15, September-October 1966. Includes notes, species summaries, catalogs on ectoparasites,and arthropods relating to birds. These are organized by island. Material types are interspersed. Locations include islands of Enderbury, Howland, Baker, Swains, Hull, Phoenix [Rawaki], and Birnie. 3) is the journal of Jeff Tordoff for SIC #9, September 1965. Dated entries describes watch duty. terrain and vegetation of islands; birds, nests, and eggs observed; and weather. Locations include the islands of Johnston, Howland, Baker, and McKean. 4) is the journal and species accounts of Robert Tuxson for Southern Island Cruise, September 7 - October 9, 1966. Dated entries contain content similar to that described above relating to bird (shore and pelagic) observing and collecting. Entries include specimen preparation, vegetation, and daily work with times of day, followed by species accounts detailing sightings with date ranges and islands, quantity and descriptive notes. Skin catalog data includes number, type, time, date, location, collecting method, collector, age, sex, weight, testes ovary measurements, fat, molt, color, and measurements. Locations include those listed above.
