Abstract

Volume 79 is a collection of the journals of R. Heiden, D. Husted, L. Huber, R. Jillson, and R. Maze completed for the Pacific Ocean Biological Survey Program, 1964-1966. These are original journals. 1) is the journal of Patrick J. Gould for the Leeward Islands, October 18 - 20, 1966. Dated entries are headed with island locations and describe daily work with times of day, terrain and vegetation of islands visited, observations of birds, eggs and nests, behaviors of adult birds to chicks, and counts listed on preprinted observation sheets. Locations includes the islands of Lisianski and Laysan. 2) is the catalog of R. S. Heiden for the Southern Islands, September 1966. Data includes number, date and sometimes time collected, type, collection location, physical description, testes or ovary measurements, sex, weight, fat content, molt presence, and sometimes band number. Collected at sea and from Howland and Enderbury island. 3) are the journals of Dayle Husted, June 11 - October 19, 1964; September 21 - October 28, 1965. Dated entries describe participants, daily work, weather, bird banding, specimen collecting, individual and groups of birds, eggs and nests, and insects found on birds. On backside of pages he lists bird observation data with date, time of day, island, activity, and sometimes sketches. Locations include McKean Island (notes indicate may have been Baker and not McKean Island). 4) is the catalog of Lawrence Huber, 1966. It includes date, island or latitude and longitude, number, type, testes or ovary measurements, weight, fat content, and sometimes additional notes about preservation, blood sampling, or appearance. 5) is Huber's journal from Southern Island Cruise, August 8 - September 23, 1966. Dated entries describe daily work, bird observations, presence of cats, and terrain and vegetation of the island. Locations include islands of Jarvis and Howland. 6) is the catalog of R. R. Jillson, 1964. Includes date, type, sex, and measurements. Bird specimen descriptions include more detailed descriptions of appearance. Collected rats and birds. Locations include the islands of Bernie, Phoenix [Rawaki], Fanning (Tabuaeran), Jarvis, and Johnston. 7) are field books and catalogs of Richard L. Maze, September 30 - June 8, 1966. Dated entries are headed with location and describe participants' work, daily activities, vegetation and terrain of islands visited, work agenda (with notes on work expectations), birds (individual and group, adult and chick, nests and eggs), island wildlife, bird lists, weather, bird counts, includes island summary of observed crustaceans, insects, vertebrates, reptiles, and birds for Howland island. Includes a hand drawn map with notes. Includes species summaries for 1965 and 1966 for types of birds, broken down by island, followed by notes. Includes one page catalog. Entries into December are primarily about bird banding (including numbers) and short observations. Locations include islands of Oahu, American Samoa, Howland, Christmas [Kiritimati], Sand, Johnston.
