Volume 78 is a collection of the journals of B. Amerson, K. Amerman, R. DeLong, and R. Fleet completed for the Pacific Ocean Biological Survey Program, 1964-1967. These are original journals. 1) are the journal and species list of Binion Amerson for French Frigate Shoals (August 4-1966, Leeward Islands (March 1964). Includes journal entry for August 4, describing work completed at French Frigate Shoals, LORAN station, referring to staff and participants, and bird banding efforts. Includes preprinted observation sheets for March 6-14, 1964, with quantities of observed birds and observation notes on behavior. Locations include islands of Nihoa, Necker, Laysan, Lisianski, Sand, Pearl and Hermes Reef. 2) are the journal and catalog of Kenneth Amerman Southern Island Cruise [SIC] #9, September 5 - November 5, 1965. Dated entries (headed with location when island location changes) describe seas, individual and groups of birds observed on sea and land, their behaviors, nest sites and eggs, blood sampling, daily work, staffing assignments, island terrain and vegetation, and campsites. Catalog includes number, type, location (latitude and longitude if at sea), age, sex, sexual organ data, physical description, molt status, and extensive measurements. Locations include the islands of Howland, McKean, Phoenix [Rawaki], Enderbury, and Christmas [Kiritimati]. 3) is the journal of K. Amerman for Sand-Johnston, January 17 - June 18, 1966 on the USNS Shearwater. Dated entries detail content and structure akin to above described, including some population observations with time of day and bird populations on military facilities. Includes sketches of bird behavior, and notes about individual birds observed. 4) are the journal and catalog for Robert DeLong for work in West Coast -- California and Mexico, April 20 - May 3, 1967. Dated entries describe weather,daily work, participants, data on observations, individual and bird colony behavior, and observations of seals including counts. Catalog includes number, type, sex, collection location (i.e. from nest), testes or ovary measurement, fat presence, if blood sampled, and molt amount. Locations include islands of Guadalupe. 5) are the journal and catalog of Robert Fleet from the Southern Island Cruise, September 3 - November 7, 1965. Dated entries detail bird observations, daily work with times of day, participants, specimen collecting and preparation, cats observed,weather, bird banding, bird lists, and island campsites. Catalog is organized by island, and includes date, number, type, testes or ovary measurements, and United states National Museum [USNM] number. In addition to locations listed above, includes islands of Kauai, Baker, and Fanning (Tabuaeran). Species account are organized by islands and include date, nest and egg quantity data, with notes.
