Abstract

Volume 76 are the journals of William Wirtz completed for the Pacific Ocean Biological Survey Program, 1963-1964. Includes typed copies of journals. 1) is the journal of William O. Wirtz II for Island Cruise #1, January 23 - March 27, 1963 on the USS Moctobi. Entries are dated. First entries discuss overview of staffing, vessel, space and equipment needs, procurement challenges as well as space allotments, equipment and regulations aboard the Moctobi regarding equipment use and storage, expected destinations, and work completed. Trip includes Fish and Game Division staff. Entries detail daily work, conditions at sea, bird observations at sea and on land,camp conditions, specimen collecting, blood samples, descriptions of nesting sites, island vegetation, remaining structures on islands, weather, seal tagging, and bird banding. Locations include French Frigate Shoals, Laysan, Pearl and Hermes Reef, North Island, Lisianski, and Howland. 2) is a second journal for the Island Cruise #1, January 30 - March 30, 1963. Entries detail observations on island of Oahu. Other details are much the same content and structure as previous journal. Entries also describe bird's nesting behaviors, seal behavior, and bird counts. Includes table for Pearl and Hermes Reef of rain fall, high and low temperatures listed by date, and time of day. Some include wind speed and direction. Locations include Eastern Island. 3) is the journal for Island Cruise #1 to Kure and Midway, February 22 - May 3, 1964. Entries are dated, and discuss interactions with participants, bird and nest observing, bird banding with references to numbers, bird counts, observations of seals (data and specimen collected), rat collecting and autopsies, seal banding with references to seal numbers, and relations between military and scientific members. 4) is the journal for collecting and observing at sea, June 5-19, 1964. Details in entries are similar in content and structure to previous journals described above.
